Hind 3–4 in long, front about 1 in. Furry prints with indistinct toe pads. Long, narrow hind feet. Front prints land one behind the other. Bounding groups of four in a Y shape.

Brushy fields, gardens, forest edges, hedges. Eastern and central North America into Mexico.

A cottontail can run in zigzags at nearly 18 mph to shake off a chase.
