A big forest weasel that bounds through snow in loping paired tracks.

2–4 in. Five toes, often only four register. Paired 2x2 loping pattern. Fur can blur the print in winter. Trail dives under logs and snow.

Mature conifer and mixed forest. Canada, New England, Great Lakes, northern Rockies.

Active day or night

Snowshoe hares, squirrels, porcupines, carrion

Fishers are one of the few predators that regularly kill porcupines.
