🦊 Gray Fox

The only North American canid that climbs trees — semi-retractable claws and all.

1.25–1.75 in long. Four toes, claw marks often faint or missing. Smaller and rounder than a red fox print. Curved bar-shaped heel pad. Trail often ends at the base of a tree.

Brushy woodland, chaparral, rocky slopes, farm edges. Southern Canada to northern South America.

Nocturnal

Rodents, rabbits, insects, fruit

Gray foxes will nap on a tree branch 30 feet up.
