Ursus arctos horribilis
A brown bear of the interior. Front tracks show long, unmistakable digging claws.
Front 5–7 in wide, hind 10–12 in long. Five toes in a fairly straight line. Claw marks far ahead of the toes — 2–4 in. Hind track looks like a broad human foot. Toes sit close together.
Mountains, tundra, river valleys, coastal salmon streams. Alaska, western Canada, Yellowstone and Glacier ecosystems.
Mostly crepuscular; active day or night
Roots, berries, salmon, ungulates, insects
A grizzly's shoulder hump is pure digging muscle.
Should I be concerned?
Serious wildlife. Carry bear spray, travel in groups, make noise, store food properly and never approach.
