🐇 Snowshoe Hare

Giant hind feet that float on powder, in the same Y-shaped hop as a rabbit.

Hind up to 5–6 in long when splayed. Two large hind prints ahead of two small front prints. Hind toes splay wide in snow. Furry soles blur the outline. Runways packed through brush.

Dense conifer and shrub understory. Canada, northern U.S., Rockies and Appalachians.

Crepuscular and nocturnal

Twigs, bark, buds, greens

Their coats change white in winter based on day length, not snowfall.
